Twin Lakes- Burera and Ruhondo are a must-visit on Rwanda safari in the Northern Province. Lake Ruhondo and Burera are found at the foothills of Muhabura volcano, and they boast of their commanding views of the volcanoes and also other surrounding area. They are referred to as “Twin Lakes” considering their strategic location, the two beautiful lakes border each other.
Burera and Ruhondo twin lakes formed due to volcanic activity, and this was experienced mostly along the Northern side of Rwanda. This explains why the Virunga volcanoes are concentrated along the Northern Province including Muhabura volcano, Bisoke, Sabyinyo, Karisimbi, and Gahinga volcanoes. They originate from the River Nyabarongo, the biggest River in Rwanda, and it flows covering the Eastern side connecting Akanyaru River/Kagera River in Akagera National Park.
