Nyakagezi Gorilla Family Migrates to Rwanda

From December 2004, a group of habituated gorillas known as Nyakagezi crossed over from Mgahinga National Park in Uganda to the Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. This group made up of 8 individuals is now on Muhabura Volcano on Rwandan side.

The Virunga massive is one ecosystem which is shared between the 3 countries: DRC, UGANDA and RWANDA it is well known for the famous endangered species that are the Mountain Gorillas. It is not a surprise that gorillas move freely from one country to another as they do not know any borders and this is an natural phenomenon.

ORTPN would like to assure the public that there is a constant follow up of this group in the framework of the regional collaboration that have been very strong in the Virunga massive. A regular and permanent communication exchange has been undergoing between the two countries.

This movement has not and will not affect in any way tourism in Rwanda as the Office of Tourism and National Parks is not taking tourists to this group.
